Game Director Joe Shely explains during a recent roundtable discussion that Diablo IV Gold reimagining sets in a manner that works with Diablo 4 properly wouldn't be feasible for the launch of Diablo 4 in the first quarter of next year, though the team is considering the possibility of incorporating them into its live service.

"As we've been building the game, we felt that we could build sets in a unique way relative to what we've observed previously in Diablo 3. But, we needed some more time to bring sets in the game in the manner that works well with other elements of Diablo 4, so you won't be seeing sets when you first start on the map," Shely explains. "We believe that sets are very cool and want to be sure that they're done right - and that's what we're looking towards for live play."

"There's a legendary staff in the demo which turns the spell's fireball to a triple fireball spell," former game director Luis Barriga told Polygon(opens in new tab) earlier in 2019. "The different is that you know, a set right now in live Diablo 3 gives you bonuses which can be a million times more. I'm sure we're planning this game now to be a little more restricted to prevent getting us in that exponential energy curve."

If you're not familiar to the term "set," Items are essentially strong pieces of gear that offer greater power when they are assembled. They're 'set' as they are always able to provide the same bonuses, and, well they're part of sets.

The first time they were introduced was in Diablo 2, though it was in Diablo 3 when they became the most dominant.
