PEO LAP (Licensure Assistance Program) is a program linking engineering interns with professional engineers (guides) who are licensed with PEO to offer the interns guidance and support, as they move towards attaining their professional engineering licence. Professional Engineers Ontario believes that this program will help new engineers by providing them with a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities and for success in their selected profession.
To be kept in mind: Not all PEO Ontario chapters are taking part in the LAP at this time. Reach your chapter chair to know if your chapter takes part in the LAP.
Who can become an Intern?
An engineering intern within the participating chapters can become an intern.
Who can become a guide?
A licenced professional engineer registered with PEO within the participating chapters can become a guide.
Acceptable engineering experience criteria:
Experience is a very important component in forming the engineering graduate on their way to attaining a licence as a professional engineer. The responsibility of offering the appropriate environment, opportunity, range, and progression of activities to fulfill the experience criteria rests with the firms that offer the working environment and the individuals who offer the working environment, and the individuals providing supervision in the internship period.
Two mandatory components of acceptable engineering experience are the application of theory and practice experience, and they must be demonstrated over a substantial part (but not necessarily all) of the internship period.
They must be supplemented by experience in, or exposure to, the wide areas of management of engineering, communication skills, and the social implications of engineering. Without at least some appropriate exposure to each of these other components, an applicant will not be eligible for a licence.
Length of work experience:
You, for licensure, need to demonstrate a minimum of four years of verifiable and acceptable engineering experience before attaining a professional engineering licence. A minimum of one year of your experience must be attained in a Canadian jurisdiction, under the direction of a licensed professional engineer in Canada.
Why you should hire a professional:
To show your PEO-required work experience convincingly and effectively, you need to have some professional writing skills and a deep understanding of your engineering field. Having such skills and knowledge is not possible for a non-professional, leading to a poor experience report. On the other hand, a professional has everything necessary to make the report flawless and convincing, which means a guarantee of a successful assessment for a licence.
